Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine

One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying.

There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Facebook IPO is official: $38 per share, on sale tomorrow under ticker symbol ‘FB’

facebook paid

We largely steer clear of companies going public here at Engadget, but Facebook and its zillions of users warrants an atypical tip of the hat. The outfit has announced that starting tomorrow, 421,233,615 shares of its common stock will be up for grabs at a price to the public of $38 per share. It’ll trade on the NASDAQ under the symbol “FB,” with the outfit offering 180,000,000 shares of Class A common stock and selling stockholders offering 241,233,615 shares of Class A common stock. Closing of the offering is expected to occur on May 22nd, subject to “customary closing conditions.” And with that, we’d like to congratulate a plethora of new billionaires on… well, being billionaires. Don’t work too hard, guys and girls.

Celebratory video is after the break.

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official — but alpha-quality — Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store — you can buy and download music from within Banshee — but unfortunately it’s only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions — and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select ‘play after’ to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up — it now looks a whole lot smarter — and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it’s shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It’s almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

More from ITP: Trying Out the Descriptive Camera [Itp 2012]

Remember that post from a few weeks ago about the Descriptive Camera, the camera that spits out written descriptions of a scene rather than a photograph of the image itself? Yesterday while I was at ITP, I had the chance to try out the Descriptive Camera for myself. More »

Windows RT and the Dastardly Browser-Exclusion Deed

Life is never dull here in the world of technology, but some weeks it’s hard to remember that this is actually the real world, and not some epic tale of the battle between good and evil. We’ve seen plenty of examples of good pulling ahead in the struggle in recent weeks, of course — but there’s never any shortage of dastardly deeds being committed, either.

Gmail and iPhone alums create Electric Imp, connect your toaster to the web

Image

Have you ever wanted to preheat your oven while on the way home from work, or start your sprinklers while vacationing, only to remember you don’t have the spare loot lying around for a network of smart appliances? A recent startup (that somehow eluded Kickstarter) called Electric Imp is about to make your wireless control / monitoring fantasies a reality with its soon-to-be-released, $25 web interface. It works much like an Eye-Fi card, and communicates with cloud services as well as other connected devices like your Android or iPhone via WiFi. The company is working hard to get the slots that work with the cards into many of the machines that we usually don’t link up to the good ol’ www — but have often wanted to — and it hopes to have everything in place later this year. This all sounds like a great deal right now, but just wait until your washing machine gets hacked and starts using scalding water on all your darks and delicates. More info at the source.

iSites overhauled, now lets you publish cloud-based HTML5 iPhone apps in minutes

iSites — a zero-code cloud-based ‘app creator’ — can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed ‘InstantApp’, you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven’t looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn’t a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple’s chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done — it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps — which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites’ new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Did you hear the one about Chrome for iOS?

Earlier today one “analyst” published an assumption that Google would be making Chrome for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and would market it extensively, and basically bring the desktop browser wars to mobile. He didn’t claim any sources, anonymous or otherwise, or any leaked information, or any good faith basis at all for the assumption. It was purely a flight of fancy, and a poorly reasoned one.

Panasonic gifts NTT DoCoMo with Eluga V, Eluga Power smartphones and Eluga Live tablet

Image

Among the slew of new Android 4.0 devices unveiled by Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo today were a trio from Panasonic, including the Eluga Power phone we’d seen before and a few new entries in the Eluga V phone and Eluga Live tablet. We’ve already gotten our mitts all over the Eluga Power’s 5-inch screen and 1.5Ghz dual-core S4 CPU at MWC, so this time we’ll take a close look into the other two Ice Cream Sandwiched models. The P-06D Eluga V is a 4.6-inch variant (sliding between the Power and original P-04D Eluga) while still packing a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU. The P-08D Eluga Live tablet measures at 10.1-inches, packs DLNA streaming features and slots stereo speakers into a smooth curved edge design. The Eluga V is scheduled to arrive July 6th, while the other two should hit Japanese shelves in January, hit the source link and brink your kanji skills (or translation software) for more information.
